Charleston’s Dream Wedding Venues! Part Two: Lowndes Grove

Our blogpost series on our favorite wedding venues in the Charleston area simply wouldn’t be complete without Lowndes Grove. We have to admit, we get excited every time we’re hired to help with custom wedding invitations design and wedding day stationery for a wedding at this spectacular location!

Here’s a look at this one-of-a-kind Charleston estate, along with a little history, pop culture connection, and a few of the reasons it’s one of our dream wedding venues. Whether you select the main house or the smaller River House on the bank of the Ashley River, you’re in for a gorgeous wedding!

History of Lowndes Grove

Lowndes Grove is a spacious estate on the Ashley River, just on the western edge of the city of Charleston itself. Originally built in or around the year 1786, the beautiful house still has its original wood floors, and many of its other fantastic architectural features date back to an 1830 renovation project.

In 2007, the estate was updated to create a highly sought-after wedding venue and event center with all the amenities and comforts guests look for–all while preserving the historical feel and lovely landscaping surrounding the house. The estate lends itself to one of our favorite wedding invitation features–a full color watercolor illustration like the one below.

A Fantastic Location

It’s easy to see why so many couples choose Lowndes Grove. The first time you see the house and its grounds, you’re bound to fall in love with it! In fact, that’s just what has happened to many fans of the TV show Outer Banks. The Lowndes Grove house features prominently as one of the main shooting locations for the show, and couples are excited to discover that the memorable setting is available as the venue for their wedding.

The incredible location of Lowndes Grove carries other benefits for a wedding weekend as well. This watercolor wedding map we created for one of our clients highlights just how many historic sites and beautiful natural features are a short drive, bike ride, or even a long walk from the venue itself. Guests who stay nearby in downtown Charleston can take in the Rainbow Row, the iconic Ravenel Bridge, and the many historic treasures scattered throughout the streets of the “Holy City.”

The River House at Lowndes Grove

If you are planning for a smaller wedding, the Lowndes Grove estate offers a fantastic option–the River House. This intimate building is ideally suited for a ceremony either inside or outside on the well-kept lawn, with the scenery of the Ashley River in the background of your wedding day photos! As with the rest of the Lowndes Grover property, the River House is private (not open to the public) and the perfect spot for a Charleston wedding.

Wedding Day Stationery

Here at Dodeline Design, we specialize in wedding invitations and wedding day stationery, and we love incorporating elements of Charleston’s style into what we do. With our studio just a few miles away in Mount Pleasant, we know the local area well and frequently design and print stationery such as place cards, escort cards, seating charts, and programs for weddings at Lowndes Grove.

Like the example below, our wedding invitations reflect not only the colors and style of the couple, but also have the option of drawing from the architectural features and mood of the venue at which the ceremony and/or reception will take place. Our expert designers create customized watercolor illustrations, wedding maps, monograms, and other elements to set their invitations apart, enticing guests to “save the date” and take advantage of the chance to visit a spectacular site like Lowndes Grove to celebrate the special day.
